Spend a morning or afternoon session with the otters - A great gift!
A real treat for otter fans and lovers of nature and wildlife.

Spend a morning or afternoon session with the otters  at the Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and gain an exclusive insight into the secret world of the otter and the work of the sanctuary. This is a hands-on experience and follows the daily routine of the staff at the Sanctuary, so expect to get up close with the otters and get dirty in the process. The session is designed to be educational and fun and is done on a one-to-two basis with our keeper so it's personal and very special. We aim to have some close interaction with the otters but please remember there is no touching, holding or petting of the otters whatsoever as they do not respond well to this.

When you purchase online we send by return post a small confirmation pack and gift voucher for the "Otter Experience". The gift voucher is valid for a year and we ask the lucky recipient to contact us by email within that time to arrange a good time to come along.

You can also pre-book a date, contact us directly before purchasing to check availability. We find weekends and holiday periods book up quickly so for a special day please give us lots of notice.

Read about a typical itinerary below.

This experience is for strictly 18 years of age and upwards and is suitable for one or two participants.

You must wear wellies on the experience and it is recommended that you bring waterproofs for wet weather. By the nature of the activities, those taking part, need to be physically fit, agile and mobile.

You may add a gift message at the checkout using the comments box and also any special delivery instructions, such as plain envelope to keep it secret if it is a special gift.

Please note that we reserve the right to cancel or postpone all otter experience bookings in the unlikely event of extreme weather, animal concerns, staffing issues etc.

Cleaning Out Time at the Buckfast Otter Sanctuary, Devon

Food Preparation at the Otter Sanctuary, Buckfast, Devon

Food Preparation

Before feeding otters the food needs to be prepared. Depending on the day of visit this may include freezing down the weekly delivery of trout into daily rations. The food then needs to be prepared suitably for the different species of otter that are resident at the time.

Feeding Time and Buckfast Otter Sanctuary, Devon

Feeding Time

The otters all need feeding and this will usually involve hand feeding some of the more friendly otters, which is very exciting, but some of the larger residents are too lively for novices to feed by hand.
